100-100: Take That, Doctors
So they said I'd never walk without a cane.
I did. I've been walking for exercise, with hand weights, for months.
They said I'd never get the circulation back in my left leg.
I have.
They said I could forget about running.
I haven't. It's hard -- I see now the doctors at the time were trying to stifle false hopes -- but I have successfully run up to 1.1 miles, and will soon be running 2. And then more. I'll never be a marathoner, but by God I'll never be a cripple either.
All this came about because of a parachute landing in January, 2004, that left me with broken heels. The repair to one heel meant over three months immobilization, which is what did the circulation damage. This immobility and the long recovery is what led me to pork out to 262 lb. (Yuck). But my body has proven more resilient, and Nature has been more benevolent, than I had any reason to expect.
Next objective: Get healed enough to get back in the war. It's coming.
The first run was awful. I hoped to make it one mile of my two mile, hilly, power-walk course; and I only made it about 1/3 of a mile before my chest complained enough that I stopped. The next run I intended to make it at least 1/2, but did a full mile. Third run added another tenth (I stopped at the same point, by intention, but have altered my course so that there's a little more distance. It was actually 1.9 mi before and now it's 2.2, with a drop and rise of several hundreds of feet). I'm still never going to be mistaken for a marathoner, but if I can get to where I can run middle distances again (5 mi, 10k) I'll be happy.
Still not too thrilled with weight loss. No progress lately. Need to eat more veggies and less of everything else....
