Introduction to the HogLog

What you will and won't find on here -- and why this is going to be the place to bookmark if you like aviation books.

[UPDATE]: Contact me at kevin at network impossible dot com.

This is the first entry in the HogLog. You can expect to find a lot on aviation here -- stuff about what's going on in that small world, although this isn't a news page by any means (for that, go to Aero-News.Net). We're insatiable readers of aviation books, and this is probably the best source of aviation book reviews on the web -- maybe in the world.

Reviews
Reviews will be posted here regularly -- sometimes many, sometimes few. There has to be time for doing analogue stuff -- like reading all the books. Not to mention flying. Plus, there's a war on, they tell me, and every once in a while duty may call.

It's in the nature of reviews that some will be positive and some will be less so. There are some great books out there, and there are some turkeys. And it might all depend on what one expects out of the book.

We don't accept review copies of books (or any other bribes or emoluments). This means that we will not have the first review of just about anything. (Although odds are we will review books no one else does). But it also means that we are never for sale. Our reviewers did like you will, and bought the book with their own money -- that means that they will take the quality of the information or entertainment a lot more seriously, don't you think?

This feature may not be running at kickoff, but in due course, we'll link each review to sources for the book: B&N, Amazon, and/or direct. We prefer B&N because its privacy policy is better than Amazon's, but we don't get a cut from books you buy from our links. This is deliberate: it prevents us from lapsing into the cheesy editorial stance, where all books are praiseworthy. It removes any pecuniary incentive we might have to praise junk.

Hot Stick's Picks
Hot Stick will be showing up here once a week. You probably know him -- he's the hottest hot rock on the air field -- just ask him. Or don't even bother; wait a minute, he'll tell ya anyway. Anyway, on Fridays you'll find a Hot Stick Pick. It might be a book or a movie, or something else, but it'll always be something good, because, damn him, he is a very good judge of aviation information and entertainment. It'll also be something well off the beaten track, usually -- something you weren't expecting. I hate to say that cause his ego's already so big they have to inch it through the cargo door.
